Lake Nakuru safari
The most accessible of Kenya's major parks from Nairobi, and the best place in the country to see rhino without effort.
What Lake Nakuru is for
Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds a soda lake on the floor of the Rift Valley, about three hours from Nairobi. It is fenced, which is unusual for a Kenyan park and is the reason it works as a rhino sanctuary: both black and white rhino are present, and sightings are more reliable here than anywhere else on a standard Kenya circuit.
It is also a serious birding destination — Rothschild's giraffe, waterbuck and a long list of Rift Valley species alongside the rhino.
About the flamingos
Lake Nakuru's flamingo flocks are what made it famous, and they need honest handling. Numbers fluctuate substantially with water level and algae conditions, and there have been long periods when the birds largely moved to other Rift Valley lakes.
Sometimes the spectacle is extraordinary. Sometimes there are comparatively few birds. Any operator promising you the classic pink shoreline is guessing. We will tell you what recent conditions have been like when you enquire.
Where it fits
Nakuru's value is proximity. Three hours from Nairobi means it slots into an itinerary that could not absorb a full extra flight, and it pairs naturally with a road route to or from the Masai Mara.
One night is usually enough. The park is compact and a single afternoon and morning game drive covers it well.
Park fees
Lake Nakuru is a Kenya Wildlife Service park, with entry paid through the KWS eCitizen system. This is a different system from the Narok County portal used at the Masai Mara, and credit in one cannot be used at the other.
We are not publishing a fee figure here until it is checked against the current KWS tariff. Your quotation shows the rate for your dates as a separate line.
When to go
The park works year-round. Dry seasons make the tracks easier and concentrate game; wet seasons bring better light and greener landscapes. Flamingo numbers follow water and algae rather than the calendar, which is why they cannot be predicted by season.
This page needs expansion before launch
Park entry fees omitted until verified against the current KWS tariff. Owned photography needed: rhino, the lake shoreline, Rothschild's giraffe. Recent flamingo conditions should be reviewed periodically so the honesty on this page stays accurate.
