How to get to Bwindi
The single biggest planning decision on a Uganda gorilla trip, and the one that decides whether Bwindi costs you a travel day or an afternoon.
Match the airstrip to your sector
Before anything else: Bwindi has four trekking sectors served by two airstrips. Book the wrong one and you add hours of mountain road to your day.
- Kihihi airstrip serves the northern sectors — Buhoma and Ruhija.
- Kisoro airstrip serves the southern sectors — Rushaga and Nkuringo — and also Mgahinga.
Your permit is issued for a specific sector, which is why permits are confirmed before flights and lodges rather than after.
From Nairobi
Fly Nairobi to Entebbe, roughly an hour and twenty minutes on frequent scheduled services. Then take one of the two options below out of Entebbe.
From Entebbe: charter
About 45 minutes in the air to Kihihi or Kisoro, then a road transfer of roughly one to two hours to your lodge depending on sector. Scheduled light-aircraft services run on most days in season; on other dates it is a private charter.
This is what nearly all our Kenya-combination itineraries use. It brings Bwindi inside a single travel day from the Masai Mara, which is what makes the whole trip shape work.
Baggage on light aircraft is limited and usually soft-sided. We confirm the allowance with your itinerary, because arriving at Entebbe with a hard suitcase you cannot load is an avoidable and irritating problem.
From Entebbe: road
Six to eight hours, and honestly assessed that is a full day. Done in one push it is a hard drive on mountain roads for the last stretch.
Broken into two, it becomes something else entirely. A night at Lake Mburo, or better, at Queen Elizabeth National Park, turns the transfer into a second wildlife destination — the Kazinga Channel boat, and the tree-climbing lions at Ishasha, which is directly on the route south to Bwindi. If you have the days, this is the better trip, not the compromise.
The honest comparison with Rwanda
Kigali to the park gate at Kinigi is two to three hours on good road, with no charter needed. That is genuinely simpler, and it is the strongest argument for Rwanda. The Uganda answer is the 45-minute flight, and the fact that the permit costs USD 700 less — which on a couple more than covers the difference.
From Kigali
Some travellers fly into Kigali and cross overland into Uganda for Bwindi, particularly for the southern sectors. It is a route operators use and it can be shorter than coming from Entebbe.
We are not publishing a drive time for it here. It depends on the border post, current road conditions and the sector you are heading for, and a figure copied from another website would be a guess. If this routing suits your trip, we will give you our own operating times for the specific date and sector.
Once you are there
Moving between Bwindi sectors is slower than the map suggests — these are mountain roads around a forest, not through it. Buhoma to Rushaga is a substantial drive. Plan to trek in the sector you sleep in.
