Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Two to three hours on good tarmac, and no internal flight. This transfer is the single strongest argument for choosing Rwanda over Uganda.
The drive
Kigali International Airport to Kinigi, where the park headquarters sits, takes two to three hours by road. The route runs north-west through Musanze on maintained tarmac for the whole distance. It is a scenic drive through terraced hillsides rather than an endurance test.
There is no charter flight and no second travel day. You can land in Kigali in the afternoon and be at your lodge in time for dinner.
Where to base yourself
Kinigi — closest to the park headquarters, with lodges within a short drive of the morning briefing. Convenient for an early start, and quiet.
Musanze — the nearest town, about 30 to 40 minutes from Kinigi, with a wider range of accommodation and services.
Because briefings start around 07:00, staying closer means less time in a vehicle before a day of walking. On a single-night stay, that is worth paying for.

Rwanda wins this comparison outright on the road figures, and we would not pretend otherwise. The Uganda answer is the charter, which brings Bwindi inside the same travel day — and the USD 700 permit saving that largely pays for it.
Crossing to Uganda from here
Some travellers fly into Kigali and cross overland into Uganda for Bwindi's southern sectors. Operators use the route and it can be shorter than coming from Entebbe.
