Why Kenya
Kenya is where safari as an idea was invented, and the infrastructure shows it. Nairobi has the best international connections in the region, guiding standards are high, and the parks are well set up for visitors without feeling processed.
For a combined trip it has one further advantage: Nairobi is the natural hub for onward flights to Entebbe or Kigali, which makes it the obvious place to start.
The parks
Masai Mara
The anchor of almost every Kenya itinerary. Exceptional big cat density, and the wildebeest river crossings from roughly July to October.
Amboseli
Large elephant herds against Kilimanjaro. Scenically the strongest contrast to the Mara and an easy addition on the way north.
Lake Nakuru
Rhino, flamingos and Rift Valley birdlife, close enough to Nairobi to fit into a tight schedule.
Two fee systems, and why it matters
This trips up more travellers than anything else in Kenya. The Masai Mara is managed by Narok County Government. Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the Tsavos are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. They use separate payment systems.
Funds loaded into a KWS eCitizen account cannot be used at Mara gates, and travellers who assume otherwise are turned away at Sekenani. Mara fees go through the Narok County portal. We handle both as part of the booking, but it is worth knowing if you are pricing a trip yourself.
The Mara ticket is also valid for twelve hours, 06:00 to 18:00, rather than a full day. Leave after 10:00 on your departure morning and you are charged again. KWS parks generally run on 24-hour validity.
How much time
Three nights in the Mara is the point below which the transfer stops being worth it. Add Amboseli or Nakuru and you are at five or six nights in Kenya, which is a complete trip on its own.
For a combined Kenya and gorilla trip, budget ten days minimum and twelve for comfort. The Kenya half typically takes four to six of those.
Adding gorillas
Nairobi to Entebbe is about an hour and twenty minutes, then roughly 45 minutes by charter to Bwindi. The forest sits inside a single travel day from the Mara.
Reserve or conservancy
Worth understanding before you compare quotes. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the government-managed core. Around its northern boundary sit private conservancies — community-owned land leased from Maasai families — which limit vehicle numbers, permit walking and night drives that the reserve does not, and fold their fees into the lodge rate.
Conservancies generally mean fewer vehicles at a sighting and more activities. The reserve means access to the river crossings and lower cost. Many good itineraries use both.
Getting around
Light aircraft to the Mara from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes; the road takes most of a day but shows you the Rift Valley. Between parks, flying saves time that road transfers spend. We build both versions and the choice is usually budget against days available.
