There’s such a dazzling array of animals in Kenya that viewing them on a Kenya safari holiday in the national parks is one of the main reasons for visiting for most people. Around bodies of water, you may see flamingos, exotic cranes and storks, and pelicans, while the forests are home to huge hornbills and rare species such as the yellow weaver bird, sunbird and touraco. Superb starlings are a beautiful bronze and turquoise and you’ll see them everywhere. There are also dozens of species of weaver bird, which make the distinctive baglike nests seen hanging from acacia trees.

To note more, Kenya’s coast also habours white sand beaches which are a perfect way to end Kenya gorilla safari with a relaxation experience at either the southern or northern beaches of Mombasa Kenya. It is a positive statement to say there is nothing lacking to see in while on safari to Kenya and our safari extension to Uganda Safari Tours for Gorilla trekking sums up a complete wildlife safari package as you explore our  Kenya gorilla trekking safari.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Uganda remains the leading gorilla trekking destination in the world. This is simply because there are about 600 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park alone and 14 habituated gorilla trekking families in the entire country. However, each mountain gorilla family can only be tracked by a maximum of 8 people per day which makes the activity quite on high demand for Kenya safari holidays.

Gorilla trekking permits for Kenya safari family holidays cost USD $700 for foreigners while East African residents can pay 250,000 Uganda shillings. However, the permits are always on high demand therefore tourists are encouraged to book for one in about 6 months advance online or contact Travelmonke to secure a permit for them. Gorilla trekking can be coupled with other colorful destinations while on your safari holidays in Uganda.

In Rwanda, there are only 10 habituated mountain gorilla families but it never disappoints while on your gorilla trekking safari. Mountain gorillas in Rwanda have taken a liking to the Virunga volcanoes and as such, one would need to prepare for a hike if they want to see the gentle gorillas in their natural habitat. In fact, this Rwanda – Kenya gorilla safari would involve a lot of hiking and sight-seeing as well.

Securing a gorilla trekking permit with Rwanda for your safari holidays is no hustle but it would cost you about USD $15,000. You would also need to have a clean bill of health to prevent any transmission of diseases like flu to the gorillas. Tourists should also note that persons below 15 years cannot trek mountain gorillas for their own safety and the safety of others. To make this experience count, you can further undertake a Mount Kilimanjaro Trek or a Ngorongoro Crater Safari Tour.

All you need to know about Kenya Gorilla Trekking Safaris

What should I know before going on a safari holiday to Kenya?

Planning safari holidays to Kenya can be quite easy and fulfilling with Travelmonke, but there are some points to note for first time visitors to ensure a fruitful safari holidays adventure. Always ensure that you have all necessary documentation including Visas and vaccination certificates. Also, ensure to make some research about the policies, rules and regulations of the country you are visiting for your Kenya safari

In addition, while planning your Kenya safari family holidays, always remember to carry any personal items like medications, personal effects and clothing. Since Kenya is a tropical country, a mixture of warm and light but dull colored clothing is necessary. In case of any dietary requirements, tourists are encouraged to make them known to Travelmonke for a better safari in Kenya experience.

What is the best month to go on a your Kenya safari?

Africa has fair weather in that we do not experience winter or extremely harsh weather conditions. However, seasons can greatly affect your Kenya gorilla safari adventure if one travels within the inappropriate time. The dry season is often from Mid December to February and June – mid August. Temperatures are often hot around this time so remember to carry light clothes for the safari holidays in Kenya.

For every Kenya safari holidays activity, there is an optimum time for it. For example; game viewing is often best done during the dry season as animals are concentrated around water sources while birding is best done in April when birds are in their nests breeding. Also, during the festive month of December, Kenya gorilla trekking adventures are often on high demand and the prices are higher than during the rest of the year or add a Serengeti National Park Trip to your travel plan.

How many days should I spend on safari?

The length of your safari to Kenya depends on your budget and how many things you want to get done. When planning Safari Holidays In Kenya, it is recommended to consult with Travelmonke to come up with the best safari package encompassing all the places you want to see. Kenya Safari Family Holidays can last from two to twelve days or more; in case you wish for an all round East African safari tour.

What should I wear on safari to Kenya?

Your dress code on a Kenya gorilla safari is very important. Africans in general are relatively conservative people thus you must ensure that your clothes are always decent. While on a Kenya safari, opt for dull colors like navy blue, black, olive green and grey. One should altogether steer away from light colors that attract a lot of attention to themselves while in the jungle.

Why choose Uganda for a wildlife safari?

Uganda is a renowned wildlife hub. The country has a massive population of wildlife spread across its national parks, forest reserves, wildlife reserves, and savannahs. Uganda has a population of over; 1062 notable bird species, 364 mammal species, 13 primate species, including a noteworthy population of more than 5000 chimpanzees and 400 mountain gorillas (almost half of the world’s population of these endangered species).

Besides the innumerable wildlife species, the country has several lakes, rivers, hot springs, waterfalls, forests and mountains. You encounter most of these attractions as you explore the various game parks on your Uganda Safari Holidays. Uganda is a marvel of wonders.

What is the Best time to travel to Uganda?

The nature of your safari or choice tour package should determine the time you decide to visit Uganda. The country’s raised topography makes the climate relatively cool throughout the year. For the best tourism experience, Uganda is divided into seasons; the months of June – August and December – February are considered to be the best time for visiting all the parks.

The months of June – September are regarded as high season. The months of March-May and October–November are considered ‘low season because of the heavy rainfalls. June–July and January–February have little rainfall, making a great time to explore Uganda.

The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the year’s main dry season; January–February and June–September. As for game viewing, the best time for the adventure is at the end of the dry season; February–March and September–October when wildlife is concentrated around water sources.

Birding can be done throughout the year but it is at its peak between November and April when migrant species are present. Also, it is best not to go on a Safari tours in Uganda during the heavy rains of April and May.

How do you apply for a Uganda visa?

Anyone travelling to Uganda needs to apply for a visa unless they are coming from a visa-exempt country. You can apply for a visa online or you can go to a Uganda embassy in your country of residence.

Though most people prefer applying for a visa at an embassy, the process is less tasking when you decide to use the online iVisa service. The application process can take an estimated 15 minutes and your visa can arrive in your e-mail inbox within one business day.

The iVisa service has an excellent support service, you are guaranteed help 24/7. The processing time for a Uganda visa varies from 1 – 4 working days, depending on the cost you are willing to pay from USD 86.50toUSD 150.30.

What is the cost of a Uganda Gorilla trekking permit?

In Uganda, mountain gorillas can only be trekked in two parks; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park situated in south-western region and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park also found in the south-Western region.

As of the year 2021, the price of a gorilla trekking permit has been set to 700 dollars per person for foreign non-residents, 600 dollars per person for foreign residents living in Uganda, and 250,000 Uganda shillings per person for Ugandans and other people from the East African community. The activity has a minimum age of 15 years old to be undertaken.

What is the age limit for trekking gorillas?

Only persons fifteen years and older are allowed to trek the endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. This rule is mainly to protect the individuals and other tourists in the group as well. Although mountain gorillas are gentle, they still are in fact giants and children might feel intimidated by their size and thus run or scream putting their lives and those of their Kenya gorilla trekking safari group mates in danger.

What entails in a gorilla habituation experience?

Mountain gorilla habituation is simply the process that mountain gorillas go through before they are ready for trekking. The process takes years (about 2 -3) as the wild gorillas are observed by humans to get them accustomed to human presence. Once these gorillas are habituated, they are upgraded to gorilla trekking status where tourists can come and observe them too.

Mountain gorilla habituation permits are often more expensive than the gorilla trekking permits since you get to spend the entire day in the wild, learning and observing the gorillas in the company of researchers and game rangers. Therefore; while planning for your Kenya safari holidays, you can always add mountain gorilla habituation for a unique and extra ordinary safari.

How far in advance should you book your safari?

We recommend you book your safari as early as possible; 3 – 6 months in advance to avoid inconveniences that come with late and last minute bookings. During high seasons; July – September and December – January, there is high competition and massive traffic in bookings, one cannot be guaranteed a place.

You should book early especially if you are travelling during the high season since most safaris sell out ahead of departure dates.

What health precautions should you take while on a Uganda safari?

Generally rated, Uganda is a safe country for tourists but we recommend you take general and personal health precautions. To avoid mosquito bites, we advise you carry a mosquito repellent to use while on your safari and also carry long-sleeved shirts and trousers to wear, especially in the evening.

Our safari guides ensure that our clients sleep under bed nets during the night. We advise that you carry your assortment of drugs if you have any form of chronic disease. Also, Uganda has standard health centers and hospitals where you can receive medical attention in case of an emergency.

What should you carry when going on a typical Uganda safari?

A typical Uganda safari means encountering the African wildernesses and jungles. As you travel to Uganda, you should consider packing your ‘survival’ kit and assortment of personal necessities.

The things you could consider carrying include; a hat, rain gear, suntan lotion, mosquito repellent, warm clothing, flash light, toiletries, sandals, swimsuit, hiking boots, camera, binoculars, a basic medical kit, and all items of a personal nature. Also, you can consider carrying enough cash to use for making personal purchases and also to use in case of an emergency.
